What is the policy for service animals?

Only dogs are recognized as service animals under titles II and III of the ADA.

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a service animal is a dog that has been individually trained to do work or perform tasks for an individual with a disability. The task performed by the dog must be directly related to the persons disability.

Vancation understands the importance of emotional support animals, however we do not require Owners to accept bookings with emotional support animals. By definition, emotional support animals provide comfort just by being with a person. These animals are not trained to perform a specific job or task and do not qualify as service animals under the ADA. Please make sure you research and are compliant with any laws that might apply to your locations, as some state and local governments have laws that allow people to have emotional support animals as their service animal.

Can documentation be requested for a service animal?

In the United States, there isn’t a legally recognized certification for service animals. The Owner may ask the following two questions to understand if the animal is a service animal. 

  1. Is the service animal required because of a disability?
  2. What work or task has the animal been trained to perform?
    • If the animal does not perform a task related to the disability or is considered an emotional support animal, you may not be required to allow the animal in most areas. 

We strongly encourage renters to notify the owner about their service animal before booking.

Likewise, Owners and are expected to accommodate bookings with a service animal even if their rules state "no pets". As these service animals are not pets, they are not subject to extra pet fees. If the animal is out of control, not housebroken, or shows aggressive behavior at any time the Owner may decline the booking and the renter will be responsible for the cancellation. It is important that service animals are not left alone in the vehicle.
